What Are You Waiting For?

“Do not wait; the time will never be “just right.” Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.” ~ Napoleon Hill

It’s easy to wait until “some day when the conditions are just right”. Unfortunately, waiting for “someday” to get here usually gives you “permission” to not get it done.

To reach your goals and do the things you want to do, you need to simply start. To borrow from Nike, you need to ‘just do it’.

Waiting for an ideal set of circumstances really means you’ll never get started. But, what if you decided today is the ideal day?

During a recent coaching session, my client mentioned that selling her house was causing her a lot of stress. It was even getting in the way of doing so many other things done. She said that things that normally wouldn’t “stress her out at work” were stressing her out and she wasn’t sure why.stressed out As we talked about it, it was the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back” thing going on. She was so stressed about the house, that any other little stress was almost too much to handle. This wasn’t the first time we had discussed the house sale. She had first mentioned it to me two months ago. So, I asked her what she was doing about it. Her answer might just surprise you–“Well, I’m waiting until the house is ready to be listed”. Being the curious coach that I am, I asked, “What does that mean?” She went through a long list of “things” that she needed to do to make the house perfect. To be honest with you, some of them were probably pretty important to get completed while others were what I would have considered “nice to get done, especially if the house had been on the market for a while without much interest”. So, after listening I said, “Ok, but what’s stopping you from listing the house?” She re-iterated the list. After more questions, and some discussion, she narrowed “the list” to just a few items and committed to getting her house listed within two weeks.

The listing date came and she put the house on the market despite many of the “things she still needed to do to get the house sale worthy”. But, she took the first real step to getting the house sold…putting it on the market, knowing that she could continue working to stage the house exactly as she wanted. She emailed me to say how much less stressed she felt about the sale of the house now that it was listed. Sure, it needed to sell, but getting it on the market made a difference. And, of course, now it had a much greater liklihood of being sold than it did while she was waiting for “the time to be just right”

Guess what? In less than three weeks she received an offer, negotiated it and had a signed deal on her house!

What’s the take away here? In order to achieve your goals, you must take action. The only way to make this the perfect time is to decide it IS the perfect time. Remember, it takes JUST one revolution of a bicycle wheel to start moving the bicycle up a steep hill. And, the same holds true for your goals. What will you do today to start the revolutions toward your success?
