Creating Happiness In The Journey

Motivation from a Dan Millman Quote

Yesterday morning I was reminded that creating happiness is an inside job. A Facebook friend’s post got me thinking about a flight I took from Detroit to Tucson about five years ago. During that flight, I watched Peaceful Warrior, the movie based on Dan Millman’s book, The Way of The Peaceful Warrior. (In the name of transparency, the link to the book is an affiliate link, which means if you click on it and buy the book, I will earn a small commission from Amazon.)

It was one of the quickest flights ever for me. I was so engrossed in the movie. I even started taking notes. One of my many favorite Dan Millman quotes comes from that movie.

“The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination.” ~Dan Millman Tweet That!

I imagine you might have heard some version of this before. But, what does it really mean to you? And, most importantly, how do you incorporate it in to your life? I could go on and on about this quote, but here are two quick takeaways for me:

  1. Creating happiness is about enjoying what you’re doing. I remember the shocked look on the faces in the audience the first time I asked “Who here believes that if you love your work, you’ll never work a day in your life?” The majority of the hands went up to show agreement. When I told them I didn’t, they were shocked that an executive leadership coach would say that. What I told them was simply this…Work is work; play is play. They are not the same thing. But, no one ever said you can’t enjoy your work.
  2. Don’t attach your happiness to the “destination”. Happiness isn’t about places or things. Places can change. Things can disappear or be taken away. If you attach your happiness to them, you give up control over your own happiness. Lack of control is a major contributor to stress. Does that sound good to you?

So, here’s my suggestion. Take a moment, right now, to answer the following question.

What joy in your journey are you overlooking because you’re focused on the destination? Tweet That!

Got it? Please share your joy in the comments below. And, now, throw your arms up over your head and let out a “WOOO HOOOOOO!”

Creating happiness is about enjoying the journey.
